Medicare Guidance in Texas

Medicare guidance for Texas residents

Understand your choices before you enroll.

Medicare has multiple parts, private-plan options and important enrollment windows. We help you organize your medications, doctors, budget and preferences so you can compare available choices more confidently.

The building blocks of Medicare

PART A

Hospital Insurance

Helps cover eligible inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice and certain home health care.

PART B

Medical Insurance

Helps cover eligible physician services, outpatient care, medical supplies and preventive services.

PART C

Medicare Advantage

Private plans approved by Medicare that provide Part A and Part B benefits and may include Part D and additional benefits.

PART D

Prescription Drug Coverage

Private plans that help cover prescription drugs. Formularies, pharmacy networks and costs vary by plan.

Two common coverage paths

Original Medicare

Part A and Part B are administered by the federal government. You may add a stand-alone Part D plan and may be able to purchase Medicare Supplement Insurance, also called Medigap, to help with certain out-of-pocket costs.

Medicare Advantage

Part C plans are offered by private insurers. You still have Medicare, but receive covered Part A and Part B services through the plan. Networks, referrals, drug coverage, benefits and costs vary.

Enrollment timing matters: Many people first become eligible around age 65, although eligibility can begin earlier in certain circumstances. Missing an enrollment window can cause delayed coverage or late-enrollment penalties. Your employer coverage, retirement date and individual circumstances affect timing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Medicare enrollment automatic?

Some people receive Part A and Part B automatically, while others must enroll through Social Security. The answer depends on age, disability status and whether you receive certain benefits.

Are all Medicare Advantage plans the same?

No. Premiums, networks, cost sharing, formularies, service areas and additional benefits differ by plan and can change each year.

Is Medigap the same as Medicare Advantage?

No. Medigap supplements Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage is another way to receive Medicare-covered Part A and Part B benefits. They work differently and are not used together.

Where can I get official Medicare help?

Visit Medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE. Social Security handles enrollment in Part A and Part B.
